STEAM in Panama:STEAM in Panama is an outreach mission started by FTC Team 7159 Robo Ravens and assisted by FRC Team 3128 Aluminum Narwhals and Canyon Crest Academy’s (CCA) Envision Humanities Conservatory. It aims to cultivate knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in Panama City, Panama. The goal of the program is to inspire students to follow their own FIRST paths, whether that be pursuing a future in STEAM, joining robotics or other team activities, or starting their own FIRST team.
In the fall of 2017, the Aluminum Narwhals, CCA’s Humanities Conservatory, and the Robo Ravens flew down Panama City, Panama to visit the Metropolitan School of Panama and the Magen David Academy. The purpose of this visit was to present STEAM in a fun and interactive environment, using robotics as a means to inspire the students. The CCA students gave demonstrations of basic Java programming and FTC hardware design. We wanted to show them that technology was a living, accessible, and fascinating collaboration.
The MET Jaguars were unable to fly up to compete for last year’s Into Orbit FLL challenge, despite being invited back to compete. However, this year they were able to fly up 2 students, Alec Smith and Joaquin Arteaga, along with a mentor, Lester Orellana. During their trip, they visited CCA’s FTC robotics workshop, where they received an introduction to the various components of FTC in the hopes that they might start a team as they begin to age out of FLL.
